Fiberglass Showers & Tubs
Fiberglass Showers
Fiberglass one-piece units can be resurfaced using the same coatings
that are applied to ceramic tiles or porcelain bathtubs.
1. The fiberglass unit is cleaned and thoroughly sanded
to give it "tooth" for the coatings to adhere to it.
2. Chips and scratches are filled and sanded smooth.
3. Several coats of epoxy primer are applied.
4. To finish the job, several coats of acrylic urethane
enamel topcoat are applied.
Fiberglass Tubs
Fiberglass tub bottoms can become soft or may crack over time.
Cracked tub bottoms are structurally repaired using polyurethane
foam injection, which is lightweight, but it cures to become
very hard.
1. Several holes are drilled in the bottom of the tub
and the foam is injected.
2. Columns of support are added which stiffens the new
surface.
3. New fiberglass is applied over top of the repair holes.
4. The surface is blended back to match the color of
the tub.
Homeowners may opt to continue refinishing the entire tub and
surround if it is a one-piece unit.
