Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a different tub color?
Although the most commonly requested colors are white and almond, almost any color is available.

How long do I need to wait before I can use the tub or countertop?
Twenty-four (24) hours for tubs. Countertops take longer depending on the style you choose.

How long will a refinished tub last?
The life expectancy of refinished bathtubs and ceramic tile can extend for many years depending on the amount of use and proper care. Care instructions are provided upon completion of work. Chips may occur, for example, by dropping a can of shaving cream on the surface of the tub. These must be fixed by one of our qualified technicians immediately to ensure water or contaminants do not spread underneath the new surface and cause furthur damage. A refinished tub should last for ten (10) years with proper care and maintenance.

Is there a warranty?
Yes, SURFACE EFFECTS, INC. offers a three (3) year warranty against peeling on bathtubs and ceramic tile. Sinks and countertops have a one (1) year warranty.

Will the tub look like it has been painted?
The new surface will look like a new tub.

How long does the process take?
The process of refinishing takes about three (3) to four (4) hours if the surface has not been refinished before.

What if my tab has been resurfaced before?
The old surface must be stripped off before a new one is applied. This usually takes about an hour.

Is new porcelain being applied?
The new surface is applied through a spray system. It is a durable coating with several coats of an epoxy primer and several coats of an acrylic urethane enamel. Porcelain is a baked-on coating that is heated to several thousand degrees in a factory.

Is buying a do-it-yourself kit a bad idea?
Yes, very much so. The skills required to properly finish a bathtub or wall take considerable time to learn and perfect. Therefore, it is unlikely that a novice can successfully resurface a bathtub and expect it to last. The kits sold over the Internet and at hardware stores do not resemble the high performance coatings used by professional refinishers.
