Bathtubs and sinks require the same preparation steps since they
are both typically made of porcelain.
1. Damaged caulking is removed and the fixture is scraped clean.
2. Acid wash the tub (or sink) to make it porous.
3. After several minutes, the acid is thoroughly rinsed with water
and dried.
4. After the drying process, any chips or deep scratches are filled
and sanded smooth.
5. The tub is wiped down thoroughly with solvent to remove any
dirt or grease that would prevent bonding of the new surface.
6. Once the solvent evaporates, a bonding agent or adhesion promoter
is applied over the porous tub to ensure proper bonding of the
primer and finish coats.
7. The tub is masked off with tape and paper and other areas of
the bathroom are covered with plastic to prevent overspray from
settling. An exhaust fan is placed in the window to vent the fumes
from solvents and spray.
8. The tub is sprayed with several coats of epoxy and primer.
9. Finally, the tub is sprayed with the finish coating - an
acrylic urethane enamel. This "synthetic porcelain" makes
our tubs and sinks look great!
